Francis Duck
SEG Member - PG Ultrasound

Francis Duck is a retired medical physicist and visiting professor at the University of Bath UK. He has degrees from the universities of Nottingham (BSc in Physics) and London (PhD, DSc). He spent time in research in medical ultrasound in the UK, Canada and the USA, and then made his career as a medical physicist in the UK National Health Service. He has helped to define safety boundaries for the diagnostic use of ultrasound, through the measurement of ultrasound exposure, fundamental studies of acoustic nonlinearity, and investigations of heat and force generation due to ultrasound exposure. He has served on IEC standards committees for ultrasound safety, and on safety committees of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine and the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, of which he was chair. He is a member of the independent Advisory Group on Non-Ionising Radiation of the UK Health Protection Agency, for which he was co-chairman of the sub-committee reporting on the Health Effects of Ultrasound and Infrasound (Feb 2010). Francis Duck was elected Member of the ICNIRP Scientific Expert Group (SEG) in March 2013.
