Timothy Leighton
SEG Member - PG Ultrasound

Timothy Leighton is Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton, UK. His interests are in acoustics, from ultrasonics to acoustical oceanography and zoology, to sonochemistry and industrial applications. He has particular interest in the safety of ultrasound when projected into the body for diagnosis or therapy, and when in-air exposure occurs through commercial deterrent or entertainment devices. He graduated from Cambridge University with MA in 1985, a PhD in 1988, and was awarded a Higher Doctorate (ScD) by Cambridge University in 2019. He is a triple-Academician, having been elected to Fellowship of three National Academies (the Royal Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Royal Academy of Engineering). He has been awarded 8 international medals (the 2018 Clifford Paterson Medal of the Royal Society, the 2014 Rayleigh Medal of the Institute of Acoustics, the 2013  Helmholtz-Rayleigh Interdisciplinary Silver Medal of the Acoustical Society of America, the 2009 R W B Stephens Medal of the Institute of Acoustics, the 2006 Paterson Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics, the Inaugural Early Career Medal and Award, International Commission of Acoustics (in 2004), the 2002 Tyndall Medal of the Institute of Acoustics, and the 1992 AB Wood Medal of the Institute of Acoustics). He has been awarded 5 awards for invention (the Royal Society's Lord Leonard and Lady Estelle Wolfson Foundation Translation Award (2018), Best New Product of the Year (2014), the Institute of Chemical Engineering Award for Water Management and Supply (2012), the Royal Society's Brian Mercer Award for Innovation (2011), the ‘Medical & Healthcare' award by ‘The Engineer' (2008), and the  Inaugural International Medwin Prize for Acoustical Oceanography from the Acoustical Society of America (2001)). He is a Chartered Physicist and Chartered Engineer, has served on numerous national and international advisory committees. He is the founder and chair of the Global Network for AntiMicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention. He is Director and Inventor-in-Chief of Sloan Water Technology Ltd. Timothy Leighton was appointed a Member of the ICNIRP Scientific Expert Group (SEG) 2020-2024 in March 2021, having previously served 2013-2016.
