With this paper, Dr Michael Repacholi offers a broad historical overview on the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. He provides in particular insights in the formation years of ICNIRP, in continuation of the work started by its forerunners, the International Non-Ionizing Radiation Committee of IRPA. The paper further summarizes ICNIRP’s activities during the last 25 years and pinpoints its main achievements, in terms of providing internationally recognized science-based NIR protection guidance and touches on ICNIRP's future challenges. The author, Dr Michael Repacholi is a former ICNIRP Chair and Member Emeritus, who was greatly involved in the establishment of ICNIRP.
